Aluminium has the widest CBAM range of any sector. Primary (electrolytic) metal is extremely emissions-intensive because of the electricity it consumes, while secondary (recycled) metal is a small fraction of it. For CBAM, the electricity behind your aluminium is the whole story.
Primary vs secondary aluminium
Primary aluminium is made by electrolysis (the Hall-Héroult process), which draws enormous amounts of electricity. On a fossil-heavy grid its specific embedded emissions can reach ~12 tCO₂e per tonne — most of it indirect emissions from that power. Secondary aluminium, remelted from scrap, is typically under 1 tCO₂e/t.
Why the grid decides your bill

Default values and the mark-up
